new orleans on my mind…

August 28, 2010

It’s hard to believe that 5 years have passed so quickly.

Five years since the day I was glued to the television, cheerfully entertaining a 1 year old and a 3 month old while fear began to grip at my core.
Five years since I paced back and forth finally deciding to pack up our valuables, to secure what we needed to leave behind and to pray that God would protect those who wouldn’t be able to journey outside of the city.
Five years since I waited and waited for my husband to return from his job so we could load up our sweet boys and get them out of harms way.
Five years since I looked back over my shoulder at the final stop sign on the campus of NOBTS and pondered whether we would ever return.
Five years since I sat on my parents comfy red couch and watched, with Kleenex in hand, as Katrina moved over the city we once called home.
Five years since the community I grew up in showered my family with every need we had, as we wondered for months whether we had lost everything.

Five years.

It doesn’t seem possible that it’s been that long! Still, the memories are so fresh.

New Orleans was the first big move Rahul and I made as husband and wife. It was the place where we welcomed 2 of our 4 children into our family. New Orleans is the place where our professors and peers became our family too. New Orleans, oh how I love that city.

Today, that’s what’s on my mind. But deep down in my heart, while I can remember the horror that surrounded those days, I am also reminded of the goodness and the faithfulness of God. I can see now, how even in those circumstances, He was working in the life of my family. It may have been a difficult and long road to travel, but it is a journey that brought us closer to one another and closer, ultimately, to Him.

I am reminded of a Casting Crowns song that spoke deeply to me during those months of restoration and  the rebuilding of a new life. It’s a simple reminder to praise, even in the midst of the storm.

I was sure by now, God, that You would have reached down
and wiped our tears away, stepped in and saved the day.
But once again, I say amen and it’s still raining- as the thunder rolls
I barely hear You whisper through the rain, ”I’m with you”
and as Your mercy falls I raise my hands and praise the God who gives and takes away.

And I’ll praise you in this storm and I will lift my hands,
for You are who You are no matter where I am
and every tear I’ve cried You hold in your hand
You never left my side, and though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm.

I love New Orleans :) We had been in South Asia one week when Katrina hit… wow! It was so hard to be all the way over here with all of that going on… with all of our friends hurting… seeing the church plant we worked with get destroyed (only the building :) )…. it was so surreal. We looked at pictures on the internet and couldn’t believe what was going on. Crazy. It has definitely been an interesting 5 years…
Great post!

Annie,
We’ll have to get together and share our stories. I NEVER hear Praise You in This Storm that I don’t think of our experience in New Orleans. We were at Sam’s birthday party when we got the word that we needed to evacuate. I remember all of the same feelings you talked about here. God saw to it that we were taken care of and blessed beyond what I EVER could have imagined. He’s like that! – Ephesions 3:20

Janice- Would love to get together for sure! There’s such a strong connection when you experience something as life altering as that! You’re right- God truly provided and blessed our family in ways we never could have dreamed of!

Well Spoken!

dear julia…

August 26, 2010

I am writing today with a heavy heart, anticipating the events that will occur in a matter of hours, and praying for the family of sweet Julia.  There really aren’t appropriate words at a time like this, only the promise of Hope that we can hold to, for a secure eternity because of  what Christ has done for us. Yet, even though my words don’t seem adequate, my heart yearns to just honor Julia by remembering her life.

You see, I first met Julia almost 5 years ago when we moved to Tampa and my husband and I began teaching with the children’s ministry at FBCTT on Wednesday evenings. I remember her wheeling in with the biggest smile; in fact, I would say she was one of those individuals that could light up any place, whenever she entered. Despite the difficulties that challenged her daily life, she lived with a constant joy that was contagious. She laughed with such expression, she talked with such conviction and boy did that girl love Jesus!

Beyond my time with Julia at church, I also had the privilege of capturing her in front of the camera several times. The first was a surprise for her incredible mother Lisa. I blogged about my experience with her and her older sister Hannah:

“I was humbled as I watched Hannah gently lift and carry Julia to different locations in the gardens, so she could ‘pose without her wheels.’ The love and devotion lived out by this example of selflessness inspired me. Smiles captivated me that afternoon in ways I had never imagined. Laughter ringing through the air mesmerized me. You see, joy speaks in the simplest of ways. Hope, gives even those with heavy hearts moments to sparkle and shine. Faith, holds us tightly and allows us to know there is a greater purpose though momentarily we might not even see it.”

I left that photo shoot inspired to do something bigger, to dream of something larger and to pursue it knowing that only the Lord could pave the way for it to become a reality. Julia was the beginning of that dream and today, as I read those words from almost 2 years ago, they tug at my heart in ways I couldn’t have imagined they would when I typed them.

Joy, hope, faith… all things that today, as we come together to celebrate Julia’s, life, will provide comfort. I can see Julia now- “without her wheels” dancing down the streets of Heaven. She’s healed from her struggles and she’s sitting with her Creator.

And you know what, I can say with confidence this is what Julia would desire for each of us- to place our trust in Christ and to live for Him no matter what.

So today sweet Julia, I will remember and celebrate you with hundreds of people, but in the days to come I will not forget either. I will remember your smile, your joy, your peace, your laugh and your love- that beautiful love for Jesus that spilled right out of your abundant heart and poured out to everyone who knew you.

Thank you Julia for the impact you have had on my life!

All my love,

Mrs. Annie

I have to admit, I love Etsy! My grandmother got me addicted. Yes, my grandmother! Even if I’m not planning on making a purchase, I find myself getting lost in all of the fun goodies- little dresses for Eden, yummy decorations for parties and adorable little creations that put a smile on my face.

Today I hopped on over to look at a product a client emailed me (Thanks Jamie) and just fell in love with what landed on the home page. Ah, so peaceful- so inspiring. Don’t you just love the color combo of white and green, with a touch of yellow? It’s so refreshing! Anyways, I loved it so much, I wanted to share it with you!

Thanks Gran…and Jamie, my addiction may be growing!

one sweet family

August 5, 2010

Summer and I have several mutual friends, attended FSU during the same years and we’re even active in some of the same activities; but this was the first time we’d had the opportunity to meet in person. Summer’s husband actually gave her this session as a birthday gift! What an awesome guy huh?! What could be sweeter than celebrating the love of your family and capturing tender moments forever?

We met up early, EARLY Saturday morning when the lighting was gorgeous and it wasn’t terribly hot. Ok, the lighting was perfect, but scratch the last part! I thought we might melt. Despite the conditions, their sweet little kiddos were such troopers. I was serenaded by Aggie and Repp swooned me with his big blue eyes! Just see how cute they are for yourself!

I adore little R in this one! It shows that a family picture really can show some personality!

When I asked Miss A to stand with her brother, she responded in this way. I think my heart melted then and there. Doesn’t yours?

One word: Adorable.

Hello Mr. Blue Eyes!

Isn’t Aggie precious here?  She was getting a bit antsy (to be honest, we all were…remember it felt like it was 110 degrees!!), so I was able to take her aside for a few minutes… just us girls. It gave her brother some time to run off his energy and provided the perfect opportunity for her to shine. This is one of my favorite images from our little “girl time.” She’s precious!

Can I say this again? Adorable!

I love the way Aggie  held her dress as she ran through the field… so girly.

This one might be my favorite image from the entire day. I love the interaction, the emotion, the way Dad is sweetly looking at his beautiful family… and again, the light- the beautiful sunlight!

One stunning hubby and wife wouldn’t you say?

Siblings…plotting something? Maybe!

Here are a few more shots from my “girl time” with Aggie!

Oh, and then there is this little handsome guy.

As a mom of 4, three of them being boys, this next image is perfect… priceless! Can’t you simply feel the joy of being 2 again?

Beautiful mom.

Oh, G family how you brightened my day with your songs, your smiles and your sweet love for one another. I pray these images have not only captured your commitment to your family, but that they will speak boldly of your love for one another many years down the road.  I can’t wait to work with you again…maybe sometime around March?!!

Annie!!What gorgeous pics.
They are all so adorable.
The kiddies are precious, and you captured all the love and fun. Great. You are amazing.

The last time you saw Heath and Amber, they were exploring the city together for their awesome engagement session. Finally, their big day arrived! I met up with the bride and her maid of honor to begin the wedding day festivities. Watching Amber get ready was so touching and her gentle reflections of her life leading up to Heath were profound. I always count moments like these as an honor. As the bride anticipates marrying her groom, there is always such a sweet glow. Amber was certainly no different!

Amber had some adoring fans…

This image is so very precious. Rebecca not only made Amber’s dress, but has also served as one of her many “mothers.” The interaction and emotion between them in this moment speaks volumes.

I believe Heath and Amber would both agree. Prayer is Power.

The lovely dress hand made for Amber.

As I walked around the church looking for something special to do with Heath and Amber’s rings the offering plate caught my eye. I immediately thought about the symbolism of marriage as an offering of your self to another. I couldn’t think of any image that would speak more clearly of that commitment than this.

Anyone who knows Heath, is familiar with this Bible. Well worn and used often, he carries it in his pocket wherever he goes. Yes, even in his wedding day tux. And, yes, more symbolism. I love it. Thanks to my awesome hubby for snagging this shot.

I love this shot of Amber’s brother watching Heath!

Isn’t she stunning?

Heath and Amber’s ceremony had several unique and touching moments. Above, you’ll see that they had just completed a symbolic act of uniting 3 separate containers full of stones into one; symbolizing their individual lives coming together with the power and foundation of Christ. Then below, a special candle was incorporated into the ceremony in honor of Amber’s mother.

Heath also played his guitar and sang a song he wrote for Amber. Talent must run in the family because Heath’s dad also sang during the service! What a beautiful testimony to their love for one another and the Lord.

The new Mr. and Mrs. Crittenden!

Finally, a few moments from the reception.

First dance…

Love the movement in her dress!

Dancing with her Dad

Speeches and a poem written by the Maid of Honor…

What an adorable favor! Heath bars and Amber sugar crystals.

Congratulations Heath and Amber. It was an honor spending the day capturing your love for one another. May you continue to trust in the Lord as you embark on this new adventure and may your adoration for one another multiply with every passing day.

The picture with the 3 crosses is beautiful… and the one of Amber’s adoring fans just made me smile. :-)

You may remember this bride to be from her brother’s wedding not too long ago, where she gave a sweet speech that brought the room to tears. What an honor to be able to capture both of these siblings on their special days!

I met up with Alisha and Anthony one extremely hot afternoon for this fun engagement session. We noticed right away that we had more than just 100 degree heat to deal with, but humid and muggy weather, an incredibly bright sun and then a rain storm that just about blew us away! Despite the challenges, these two were pros! Check out their awesome session below!

P.S. They liked to kiss!

Love this one!

Look at Alisha’s stunning eyes! WOW!

Sometimes I ask people to do random things and I always love when they oblige! This time, I spotted a little “treasure” in a store window and quickly asked these love birds if they’d sit down in front of it. Without giving myself away, I wanted to surprise them with a few images where these words were “sweetly singing” in the background
You are my sunshine, My only sunshine…

Caught this right before a rowdy passerby jumped into the frame!

After spending a little time downtown, we headed to the beach to finish up our session. When we arrived it was a typical Florida beach day… Florida being the key word, because it didn’t take long for the sky to darken, the wind to start whipping, the lightening to start popping and us to start running to the car in the rain!

I love the way the wind caught Alisha’s skirt in so many of these images.

So romantic.

These two are some more of my favorites!

There’s that awesome wind!

This one is so serene and peaceful!

Hands down my favorite of the day!

This was taken literally 10 seconds after the lightening struck and the thunder rumbled so loudly that I let out a true “girly scream” and about 10 seconds before the rain started to pour. The clouds are amazing!

Alisha and Anthony- thanks for hanging with me on this adventurous day! I can’t wait until your wedding!

The pictures are amazing. Love the couple and love the pics. Great job capturing them.

When I first met Jeremy, Daniela and Jeremy’s mom over coffee at Starbucks, I simply fell in love with them! They were such a sweet couple and Jeremy’s love for his soon to be bride was evident with every word he spoke. I became even more thrilled when Jeremy and Daniela noted they wanted something totally unique for their engagement session. After a few minutes of brainstorming, this adorable couple shared how much they love the Rays and even hitting the batting cages for date nights! It became clear that we had our unique idea and although we had to reschedule due to icky weather, it was worth the wait!

Love this.

To change it up a bit, we decided to move to a completely different location. The 3 of us had been searching for the perfect field for weeks, to no avail. However, my awesome hubby spotted this one during an outing with our kiddos and knew it would be perfect for the session. I’m so thankful for his creative eye because this spot was the PERFECT place to capture the love Jeremy and Daniela have for one another!

Be still my beating heart.

Love, love these two! Some of my favorites from the day hands down.

Thank you Lord for amazing sunlight and for glorious wind- they make this image all that it is!

Finally, I always ask my couples to bring something that’s special to them or significant in their relationship. Jeremy and Daniela knocked it out of the park! They surprised me with this quilt made by Jeremy’s great grandmother and given to his parents.  Robert Bishop author of the The Romance of the Double Wedding Ring Quilts notes, “Clearly, the motif of interlocking rings is a very old one and can actually be traced far back in history. In fact, interlocking ring motifs clearly resembling the DWR appear on several existing Roman glass vessels or lamps from approximately the four century A.D.!” What a rich history and what a beautiful way to incorporate a family heirloom!

Can’t you just feel the love?

Jeremy and Daniela also brought along, as they called it, “a random pink chair” to incorporate into their images. I love random!

Since there were so many other images I wanted to share from our fun time together, I put together this video. Daniela told me that Jeremy is a huge U2 fan…HUGE! So, here’s to their love… certainly, The Sweetest Thing!

I’m always excited to receive an email from possible clients, but I was beyond thrilled when this request for a Heritage Session arrived! I had already had the honor of spending some time with this sweet family capturing the generations on Bobby’s side. Martha was now requesting some images of her grandmother at the young age of 88, her mother (who also happened to be my High School AP English teacher and one of my favorite educators of ALL time) and her girls Kate and Lizzie.

As I continued to read her email, I was captivated by the rich history of their family and the home where we would meet for our time together. Martha’s great grandfather built this home. There have been  5 generations on the same piece of land and 4 generations of women who have lived in this same house. Isn’t that amazing?

We had a wonderful time reminiscing about the past; and I soaked in all the stories they generously shared. I especially loved how Martha’s grandmother got the name “Gonsie.” (My sincerest apologies for the misspelling!)

The original deed for the land.

This is one of my favorite images from the day! I love “Gonsie’s” hands holding the picture of the home from days gone by!

I feel like this next one could be in Southern Living. The girls quietly playing in the garden, in front of this amazing home, rich with history and abundant memories speaks volumes.

Could it get any sweeter than this?

If you’ve ever wondered whether a Heritage Session is for you, I’ll just let this picture speak for itself.

We finished up with Martha, Bobby and their charming little girls.  Aren’t they such a gorgeous family?

Martha, thank you for inviting me to be a part of this wonderful morning with your precious family. The blessing was all mine!

Your statutes are my heritage forever;
they are the joy of my heart.
My heart is set on keeping your decrees
to the very end.

Psalm 119:111-112

Kate and Lizzie are too precious and it’s neat to think someday they’ll be showing THEIR great granddaughters photos in front of this house. Praise the Lord for blessing us with family!

What a blessing that I put off scheduling a “studio portrait” of these 4 generations! Procrastination paid off, because we found Annie. No one could have created better illustrations of this chapter of our family story. This setting added emotion and history to the picture, and will always remind us of the many other generations and individuals we are blessed to call family.

Alisha Moore posted the following on July 26, 2010 at 1:17 pm.

These pictures are beautiful! I remember Mrs. Strickland telling us stories about that house in class, it’s amazing to see it such a unique way.

Elizabeth Bradley posted the following on July 26, 2010 at 3:33 pm.

Wow Annie! These pictures are just precious. I know they’ll treasure them forever. What a sweet family! And I completely agree with you… and with Sharon… I loved having Mrs. Strickland as a teacher. She was definitely one of my favorites!

You might remember the lovely Melissa and her sweetheart Wakefield from their downtown engagement session. You might also recall that Melissa attended one of the first Bible Studies I ever led when we moved to the area. Those two simple facts assured me that it was going to be an incredible day for a super special lady; and also that I’d be even more emotional than ever! Yes, I’m the photographer that needs to carry tissues with her for the ceremony and the first dances!

Melissa started her day off in a room with a view…quite literally! She was able to catch a glimpse of her ceremony location, Bok Tower, all morning long.

Melissa selected warm, rich jewel tones for her wedding. The colors complimented her so well, as you’ll soon see!

A little ring fun as always!

Melissa’s something old was this beautiful gold grape cluster that has been worn by her groom’s family 6 times during wedding celebrations. I LOVE the box!

This is a little like “Where’s Waldo?” but can you spot the stunning bride getting ready in this image?

Oh Melissa, you were radiant!

Once Melissa was in her gown, I headed over to hang out with the guys for a little bit.

I am loving this little guy!

Check out the posing going on here. Seriously, these two ring bearers were precious!

Kyle, this is for you… He presented Wakefield with Titanium cuff-links.

We tucked the guys away and whisked the girls out for about 10 minutes before Melissa walked down the aisle!

The lovely sisters.

The girls rode on golf carts up to the ceremony site. Here was Melissa catching her first glimpse of her big day.

I love these next two… the bridal party waiting for their cue, standing on what is a hill – in Florida!! Proof that we have a little elevation. Next, Courtney and little Isabelle walking down the aisle. So precious!

One of my favorite ceremony shots of the day. Wakefield and Melissa had just lit the unity candle and if my “mouth reading” serves me correctly, through the lens of my camera nonetheless, Wakefield asked Melissa if they could pray… and they did. What a beautiful moment!

Then they released birds…I would say this is pretty brave to actually hold them on your wedding day- but it was so Wakefield and Melissa!

Not to mention, it made for a great shot too!

If you’ve read this blog before, you know I always keep an eye out for the groom fiddling with his ring. It seems to happen soon after the ceremony, as they get used to the “feeling” of being a husband! Wakefield did not disappoint, in fact, he did something I’ve never seen a groom do before. He started showing it off to the bridal party. I love it!

A few shots of the new Mr. and Mrs. before the reception got underway. I love how Melissa’s joy just spills out of these images.

The reception was held in an old church, which now houses the Lake Wales Art Center. It was stunning!

The first dance…

…and the fabulous cake!

Isn’t this place fabulous??

Lots of great dancing! I especially love this one of Carolyn, a bridesmaid, who also happened to lead a Bible Study with my brother at the FSU BCM.  What a small world right? Of course, you know I’ll sneak in a shout out to the garnet and gold whenever I can!

Melissa’s expression is priceless and that bouquet got some serious air!

The bride and groom off to their honeymoon…so everyone thought!

Actually, they just circled the block a few times and came back for couple shots. Since they didn’t want to have a first look before the ceremony and they also didn’t want to miss out on the beginning of their reception; this bride and groom came up with their own solution. Pictures after the guests were gone! We started off this “newlywed session” at the Art Center.

They had a fabulous and unique exhibit…tons of color and lots of glass!

Then we headed down town.

Love these two so much!

The perfect picture to end the post! It came by request of the bride and the sun cooperated divinely!

Congratulations Melissa and Wakefield! It has been an honor getting to know you over the last several years and to watch you exchange your vows was just the icing on the cake! I pray God’s richest blessings over your marriage, as you seek to honor Him in all you do.

Gorgeous! I had no idea the views from Bok Tower were that amazing! (I guess it’s a unique thing to see Florida from any type of “elevation”:) The Arts Center is so cool… if you had only posted the pictures and then said, “I went to Such-n-such-Shire in England for this wedding” it’d have been believable (maybe except for any palm trees in the frame:) Great work again Annie and congrats to the new Mr. and Mrs.!

These pictures are absolutely awesome and you certainly captured the joy and radiance of the bride. Wasn’t she absolutely gorgeous! And I was especially thankful to see the photo of them sharing their first prayer as Mr. & Mrs. Wakefield Wade. I have never seen this at a wedding before. It was so beautiful and meaningful for them to stop after lighting the unity candle to give thanks to the Giver of all good and perfect gifts…their love for one another. What more could a grandparent ever ask for!
